Summary on Grant Application Form
This work addresses a number of physical issues that must be understood if laser control of atomic coherence and quantum interference is to be used to enhance the linear and non-linear optical properties of matter. In particular we will perform experiments to study the evolution of interfering atomic coherences excited by pulsed laser fields and the dynamics of the associated atomic populations. The role of collisions in the EIT schemes will be studied as will quantum interference involving autoionising states. A novel ultra-narrow bandwidth laser system (<25MHz) will be developed and utilised in some of these investigations.
