Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal seeks support for a programme of work directed towards the synthesis and complete characterisation of new magnetic materials with framework structures based on perovskite, pyrochlore and nasicon. The synthesis of materials exhibiting either GMR or ferromagnetic properties are targeted. With respect to GMR materials, perovskite and pyrochlore oxides and oxide-fluorides will be examined to further our understanding of the relationships which exist between crystallographic structure, band structure and electrical / magnetic properties. Rationalisation of the differences between GMR manganese oxides with the perovskite and pyrochlore structures is of particular importance. This research is complemented by a programme aimed at producing ferromagnetic pyrochlores and nasicons by introducing magnetic transition metal ions into sites normally occupied by non-magnetic (or lanthanide) ions. In this way, for example, we hope to relieve the inherent frustration of the pyrochlore structure by inserting magnetic ions into the available channel sites. Novel synthetic approaches will be used including high pressure and thin film techniques. The programme will be supported by several key collaborations.
