Summary on Grant Application Form
The ingestion of hot mainstream gas into the turbine wheel space cavities of gas turbines has been a problem from the earliest days. Although it is not necessary to completely seal every wheel space, the accurate prediction of the cooling/sealing flows to be bled from the compressor is obviously essential if expensive engine trials are to be minimised. Some detailed experiments, thoroughly checked, have proved impossible to model using 3D steady state CFD applied to the wheel space coupled with a potential flow solution of the mainstream flow. Discrepancies of a factor of five or so are present. The CFD research proposed will model both the wheel space cavity and the mainstream flow together (including the upstream boundary layers), so that all possible 3D flow mechanisms are included in the computations. Calculations will be carried out using UnNEWT. a 3D unsteady code, to include the full effect of the rotor-stator interaction on the rim seal. Validation of the method will be by comparison with the data produced by the rotor-stator rim seal experiments supported by EPSRC grant GR/K10478.
