Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed research is in two parts. The first aims at producing a significant enhancement of the capabilities of industrial slab waveguide lasers by developing technology which permits (I) the generation of trains of sub-microsecond laser pulses, (ii) single, selected wavelength operation, while seeing to preserve the operational advantages of the first generation of commercial slab waveguide lasers. This phase involves the investigation of opto-mechanical and acousto-optic Q-switches in specially designed slab waveguide resonators. New resonators are also proposed for the achievement of wavelength selection. The second phase, conducted in partnership with a number of industrial collaborators, is designed to investigate the use of the new technology in a range of material processing applications relevant to manufacturing in aerospace, electronics, energy and medicine. These include cutting and drilling of composites, polymers, and metals.
