Summary on Grant Application Form
This project will involve the use of environmentally friendly solid acid catalysts based on the use of immobilised aluminum chloride and other Lewis acids, in liquid phase organic reactions. The research will be directed towards seeking solutions to the major problems associated with the use of such catalyst partly by achieving a better understanding of the nature of the catalyst surfaces and the mechanism of catalysts deactivation, and by improving catalyst activity and selectivity, developing effective methods of catalyst reactivation and applying appropriateness reactor and separation technology to different types of reaction. By focussing on important liquid phase reactions and be addressing the particular problems associated with catalysts for such reaction systems we will seek to develop new catalytic technology of value to the highly successful UK fine and specialty chemical industries where acid catalysis is widely used but normally involves the use of corrosive and toxic reagents, unselective processes,, and the production of unacceptable levels of toxic waste.
