Summary on Grant Application Form
We will use organic templates, designed according to molecular modelling and principles of molecular size, shape and charge distribution and synthesised, where necessary, in house, to direct the hydrothermal crystallisation of gels to give targeted large pore zeolites and novel large pore aluminosilicates, aluminophosphates and organozeolites (free diameter >7A). Efficient organic synthesis routes will be developed for chosen template species using known reaction steps. The role of the template molecules will be investigated both experimentally (by NMR and diffraction) and rationalised computationally in terms of energetics. This will enable a learning cycle and the reintroduction of ideas to prompt further template design. The product solids will be characterised fully and where necessary ab initio methods or microcrystal diffraction used for structure solution. The adsorption and inparticular the catalytic properties for acid-catalysed hydrocarbon transformations or reactions such as catalytic cracking, isomerisation and esterification will be screened, and use made of industrial testing facilities for promising new materials.
