Summary on Grant Application Form
The research programme will develop and apply new adaptive, moving mesh algorithms for computational partial differential equations. The main feature of the approach, originally developed for elliptic equations, is that the mesh will be optimised by solving a sequence of small local partial differential problems. This will result in a highly efficient use of computing resources in industrial or scientific applications. The research effort will be principally directed at (1) the extension to hyperbolic problems, with emphasis on least-squares, the choice of local boundary conditions and the treatment of discontinuities; (2) extension to parabolic evolution problem. After temporal discretisation, the problem will be reduced to a variational (minimisation or saddle point) problem that provides the optimality criterion; (3) development of multilevel techniques for improving the performance of the adaptive and solution algorithms. The research will deliver innovative and fast algorithms and demonstrate their applicability to problems of immediate interest to those sectors of industry that rely on numerical software.
