Summary on Grant Application Form
This is a joint application concerning the chemical vapour deposition of tin sulphide films, with and without metal doping, and the characterisation of the new materials. Interest in the properties of the 14-16 films is growing, though to date only the deposition of Sn02 has been extensively studied. We will synthesise homoleptic tin (II) and tin (IV) thiolates as precursors to SnS and SnS2 films. We will then use bimetallic thiolates in order to introduce metal dopants into these films, and finally we will explore the possibility of depositing mixed tin oxide/sulphide films from hybrid alkoxide/thiolate precursors e.g. M[Sn(SR) 2 (OR) 2}. The material properties of these films will be fully characterised. The joint applicants will bring complimentary areas of expertise to the project. The majority of the synthesis being carried out at Bath (Dr Molloy) while the film characterisation will be done at UCL (Dr Parkin). Both applicants are well funded in the area of MOCVD (4 current case awards) and are collaborating under the CASE scheme through complimentary projects sponsed by Pilkington Plc.
