Summary on Grant Application Form
There has been substantial scientific interest in facial modelling for over a century starting with the reconstruction of the human face and mathematical studies of shape change due to growth. The work to be carried out under this proposal will develop statistical methodology for shape regression. The procedure will be illustrated with important applications for medical and forensic facial reconstruction and facial disease assessment. The new methodology will have practical benefits in surgical planning, forensic science and police investigation. Our collaborators are experts in the areas of facial surgery and forensic science. Also, our active involvement in the Centre of Medical Imaging Research in the University of Leeds widens the area of benefit of any results. With the increasingly routine use of image capture equipment in science and technology, the proposed work is of great significance.
