Summary on Grant Application Form
Corrosion profiling and conrete property measurements will be assessed together, thereby providing a link betwen surface absorption/desorption characteristics; cover-zone properties and state of the steel surface. The work will utilise both surface applied absorption techniques in conjunction with embedded electrode arrays and rebar mounted elecrodes to study:volumetric gain; the rate and depth of the water penetration;drying effects/extent of the convective zone; effective porosity; variation in conductivty through the cover-zone, together with estimates of the variation of capillary pore saturation and total porosity. In parallel with these measurements, corrosion studies will be undertaken to monitor the state of the surface of the steel thereby tracking the movement of a corrosion front through the cover zone. Samples will be subjected to cyclic wetting and drying with water/chloride applied to the exposed surface. A portion of samples will be subjected to a severe salt-spray regime.
