We will carry out a series of analogue laboratory experiments to investigate natural ventilation to multiple room buildings. A postgraduate student will be trained to use aqueous saline solutions to model the flow within buildings with several interconnected rooms. Particular attention will be paid to the mixing processes involved in cross ventilation, and the effect of internal obstructions, sources of heat (e.g. people, machinery etc), and solar radiation on the air flows within and between interconnected rooms and the exterior. We will use sophisticated flow visulalisation and data acquisition equipment to measure the time-dependant evolution of the density and veolcity fields within various rooms, concentrating on identifying regions both of intense mixing activity, and also trapped regions of low flow. Simultaneously, we will develop simple physical and mathematical models of the observed flow processes, and verify these models by comparison with our experimental results. Also, we will compare our models with complementary studies, both using computational fluid dynamics, and larger scale experimentation and observation.We will apply our results, through industrial contacts, to improve the design of natural ventilation systems within real, multiple room buildings.
