Summary on Grant Application Form
There is evidence that the nature of the titanium oxide film that is produced on titanium base alloy implants and devices can seriously affect the bioactivity of that system. Surgical practice is divided on the cell response and toxicity of titanium components. The purpose of the present work is to grow well characterised titanium oxide both in the bulk form and as a surface coating on titanium in order to assess the effects of bioresponse of the system. Chemical (sol-gel) and vapour phase techniques will produce range of TiOx (where x can vary over a wide range of sub oxides). These will be observed by advanced surface chemical analysis and their response to cells will be monitored in the static and dyanmic mode.
