The proposal is to study novel polynuclear transition metal complexes which require low and variable temperature high resolution X-ray diffraction data. Two classes of compounds are targeted:1) Dinuclear co-ordination complexes with twisted magnetic planes2) 1, 1-azide bridged dicopper complexes with anomalous magnetic properties. We propose, in order to carryout our studies, to use state-of-the-art equipment available in Durham:3) The unique Fddd high intensity single crystalk cryogenic diffractometer that offers the possibility of performing very accurate X-ray diffraction studies in the range 10-300K, allowing small important structural differences that could be masked at higher temperatures by the atomic vibrations to be observed and measured.4) A Siemens SMART diffractometer with a CCD area detector and an Oxford Cryosystems open-flow cryostat. This system allows fast screening of samples and data collection, allowing the following of structural changes with temperature.
