The team of investigators:- Professor DJ Fray, Dr RV Kumar, Dr AG Clarke and Mr LJ Cobb (RA), have developed a novel bulk humidity sensor for high temperature applications and tested them in the laboratory with excellent results. In an innovative approach, the recently discovered doped strontium cerate electrolyte was interfaced with a Au-Pd chemcial filter such that no seperate reference compartment is required. This design, therefore is extremely compatible with planar technology. In this 18 months extension, it is intended to apply the materials chemistry principles in order to develop thick humidity sensors by screen printing the electrochemical assembly on ceramic substrates and test on-line at elevated temperatures, both the bulk and the planar sensors in specially adapted combustion system. As current methods of calibration cannot be applied to high temperature on-line humidity sensors, a novel method is being developed to validate the sensors performance. It is also intended to fabricate prototype bulk and planar sensors, probe assembly and calibrator in order to attract a consortium of users and manufacturers for future field trials and industrial use.
