Summary on Grant Application Form
The migration of grain boundaries during deformation and annealing is arguably the most important basic physical mechanism which occurs during thermomechanical processing of metals, playing a key role in static and dynamic recovery, recrystallization and grain growth. We currently have a poor knowledge of the mobility of high angle boundaries, and an almost total ignorance of the mobility of low angle boundaries. These factors provide serious impediments to the development of better theories of thermomechanical processing and to better industrial practices. The project aims to correct this situation by using developed techniques including in-situ SEM annealing, and subgrain growth in single crystals, to carry out a systematic investigation of the effects of important parameters, including orientation and alloying, on boundary mobility in aluminium and other metals. The results will be used to develop and test theories of boundary mobility and their role in various annealing phenomena.
