It is proposed to guide and channel cold atoms along a hollow fibre using a laser beam that has a central minimum of light intensity. The cold atoms will be generated from an atom trap. An atom trap is a well-established device with which it is possible to cool and localise atoms to a small region of space using laser light. The cold atoms will emanate in a beam from a small hold in the trap structure and he directed towards a hollow fibre. The light beam with the central minimum will propagate along with the atoms and force atoms away from regions of high light intensity, thus channelling them along the centre of the fibre. This technique could be of widespread interest in a number of areas including fundamental physics and also in nanotechnology - it is possible to write sub-micron structures using atoms and manipulation of atoms using fibres could be of great interest in this field. Further experiments are proposed which involve the study of interaction of light fields possessing orbital angular momentum and cold atoms. This could lead to novel and enhanced techniques with which to confine cold atoms in a trap.
