Summary on Grant Application Form
A fundamental experiment and theoretical study will be carried out on the reaction of the beam of cold (10K) atomic hydrogen with hydrogen atoms absorbed on carbon surfaces prepared at cryogenic temperatures (10-100K. The reaction probability as a function of collision energy and vibrational-rotational distribution of the H2 product molecules will be measured in a new apparatus (via time-gated time-of-flight mass spectrometry and resonant-enhanced multiphoton ionization detection) and computed (by combining a newly developed quantum scattering theory with density functional calculations). The detailed experimental and theoretical results will be compared and will provide fundamental new information on this important recombination reaction. In particular, the system to be studied represents a realistic model for the recombination of H atoms for producing H2 molecules on cosmic dust grains in the very cold temperatures of the interstellar medium.
