This grant proposal is concerned with the integrated structural and physiological modelling of soft biological tissues. The real time physically based modelling of structural deformations in soft tissues due to external forces remains challenging despite recent advances. However, it is important to stress, that from a biological systems perspective a deformation due to mechanical loading may also alter some of the physiological processes within the tissue, which over time, could in turn lead to structural changes. This grant application is concerned with the modelling of this feedback loop involving the complex interaction of structural and physiological processes.A surgical simulator will be constructed to aid the training of the basic surgical skill of suturing soft tissues. The simulator will combine structural simulations of the deformation of the soft tissue under the forces imposed by the suturing process with a physiological simulation of the changes in the electrical impedance of the tissue arising from these forces over an extended time period. The visual display of this simulated physiological measurement data will provide a means for the trainee to assess the implications of their actions.
