Summary on Grant Application Form
Time-dependent reliablility techniques will be developed to quantify the risks of shoreline evolution. Beach erosion and accretion at any given time and location will be treated as a combination of the short term and long term random processes some of which are weakly correlated. Besides the wave and water level the random variables to be examined will also include those characterising the beach and shoreline properties as well as the parameters in the numerical models. As the end product of the project, a hybrid Level II and Level III procedure will be developed which will remedy some essential weakness of the existing probablistic shoreline analysis methods. The ultimate aim of this research is to improve the rational basis of the probabilistic method and make it more attractive and accessible to the practice engineers and coastal mangers.
