Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposal involves the systematic investigation and refinement of current modelling procedures for electron energy loss near-edge structures (ELNES) measured using PEELS in the TEM. Current cluster-based multiple scattering (MS) theory modelling will be thoroughly investigated and improved via the use of more accurate approximations for the potentials used to calculate the scattering phase shifts. This will be achieved via a detailed study of selected model systems. Results will be compared with those derived using alternative methods of electronic structure calculation. The refined MS modelling procedures will be applied to a range of materials systems where analysis of the bonding in the bulk at interfaces and at defects is of critical significance.
