|
Children with severe communication disorders are unable to communicate in the same way as their peers and rely on computer based communication devices with speech output for spoken and written communication. Although some children develop good communication skills, many more remain passive observers. One reason for this is that existing devices do not provide ways in which these children can easily tell their stories to their family and friends.This project will investigate whether the functional communication of children who use communication devices will improve if they are able to use their own creative writing in conversation. A number of children with severe communication disorders will be trained to use a device which allows them to tell their own stories. They will be observed for twelve months to ascertain whether they will use their classroom writing for conversation.The results of the research will provide both teachers and speech and language therapists with techniques for teaching children to communicate more effectively. This will have an impact on the social development of children with severe disabilities and will improve their quality of life.
