Vibrating fresh concrete reduces its yield value to zero and permits it to flow under its own weight to pass between reinorcement, fill formwork and release air bubbles. Despite decades of use there is still no rational basis for the selection and positioning of vibrators. This project aims to establish the relationship between rheology of fresh concrete, its fluidity under vibration and the propagation of vibration. Together with an analysis of the modes of vibrational excitation produced by typical industrial concrete vibrators this will enable the spatial distribution of fluidity to be predicted. The fundamental relationships so established will be the first step towards producing a design guide related vibrators, their optimum positioning and the nature of the concrete to be compacted to the geometry of the unit being cast. This project involves laboratory investigations of the effect of shear and compressive modes of vibrational excitation on the rheology of fresh concrete, supported by tests on industrial equipment.
