Residual carbon in fly ash needs to be monitored for two reasons; it is a measure of furnace efficiency, and concrete incorporating ash is unsightly and is weakened if too much carbon is present. Presently there is a lack of suitable in-situ monitoring equipment. Optical techniques are ideal since they provide non-perturbing and rapid on-line measurement. Earlier work demonstrated the feasibility of an optical method using the polarisation ratio in backscattered light. A linear correlation was obtained over a wide range of carbon mass fractions, although the slope depended on the coal type. The method was successfully tested on a furnace at Powergens Power Technology Centre. This proposal is to develop an optical probe using this technique. Two questions will be explored; the efficacy of the method at concentrations below 10% (the Powergen measurement suggests success) and whether additional information can be obtained to obviate the need for calibration between coals, including the use of neural networks. Following the laboratory stage, trials will be made on furnaces at Powergen and ICL both to monitor the carbon content of ash and to investigate the ash formation process by making measurements of coal and ash during the combustion process.
