The reaction chemistry of h2 (4e) -bonded phosphaalkyne complexes will be developed leading to polymers, rings and cages of alternating phosphorous and carbon centres. In addition the oxidation of the phosphorus centre present in phosphorous and carbon centres. In addition the oxidation of the phosphorus centre present in l3 -phosphaalkyne complexes will be explored opening the way to the development of the co-ordination chemistry ofl5 -phosphaalkynes.In the first of these two objectives, the reaction chemistry of [Tacl2{h2(4e)-But C=P}(h5-C5Me5)] and [Ta{h2 (4e) -But C=P} (PMe3)2(h5-C5Me5)] will be explored with an emphasis on tantalacyclopenta-1, 3, 5-trienes, phospha- h2 (3e) vinyls and diphospha-h4 (5e) -butadienyl complexes. The stduy of phospha -h2(3e) -vinyls might also lead to phosphido / carbene sustituted complexes with interesting properties. The reactivity of a range of l3-phosphaalkyne transition metal complexes towards one electron oxidants in the presents of alcohol amines, dimethyldioxirane, TPAP/N - methylmorpholine - N - oxide or organic oxidants such as PhIcl2, biacetyls and o-benzoquinones will be studied. It is believed that such studies will lead to the synthesis of carbon analogues of the phosphonitrilics with interesting consequences for the development of new materials.
