In conventional, multi-user, multi programmed computer systems, applications that wish to send and receive data over networks must ask the operating system to perform the necessary action on their behalf. This is done to maintain system integrity, preventing applications both from snooping on data belonging to others and from generating spoof data appearing to originate from other sources. Unfortunately, invoking the operating system to send and receive each and every packet is inefficient. This can prevent applications from fully utilising the bandwidth made available by new high-speed networks.The project aims to build an 'Application-accessible' Fast Ethernet interface. This novel device will contain additional hardware to implement security features normally enforced by the operating system. Applications will thus be able to send and receive data by communicating with the device directly. This should not only result in substantial performance improvements for traditional applications, but also benefit several important areas of current research. Direct application access will yield lower round-trip latencies. This is crucial to the performance of cluster-computing and normally requires specialist hardware. Demultiplexing packets to their destination application as soon as they are received will enable the interface to provide stricter quality service guarantees to multimedia applications.
