Summary on Grant Application Form
This research programme is that of the School of Chemistry of the University of Leeds and thereby covers a vast range of structural problems in a variety of successful high-profile areas that range from biological through organic and inorganic chemistry to materials science. These include synthetic studies in organic, organometallic, and organophosphorous chemistry which are directed towards the development of new stoichiometric and catalytic processes of both chiral and achiral nature. The definition of molecular structure is crucial here as it is for the delineation of novel small and bog-borane architectures, and as it is in materials chemistry. Natural product chemistry, the biosynthesis of antibiotics and alkaloids, and areas of molecular recognition, supramolecular aggregation and spontaneous self-assembly, all pose demanding structural problems. An X-ray facility with the ability to tackle much smaller and / or more sensitive crystals and an access time of hours / days rather than weeks is vital if we are to maintain and enhance the burgeoninig and productive programmes within an expanding research School.
