A two year project is proposed to develop a prototype high mass polyatomic ion beam system capable of providing 0 to 20 keV C60+ and / or (Csl)n CS+ beams for incorporation in ToFSIMS instruments used for surface analysis. The purpose is (a) to greatly increase (10 to 100 times compared to Cs+) high mass secondary ion yields; (b) reduce molecular ion fragmentation; (c) increase high mass neutral yields to increase sensitivity in post-ionisation-SIMS. The prototype gun will be incorporated in to the new BioTof SIMS system at UMIST to significantly increase performance for the surface analysis of complex organic and bio-organic materials and systems. The research will be supported by the close technical input of a small UK company - lonoptika - who have enormous experience in the design and construction of novel ion beam systems. Successful development of this ion beam system will greatly benefit research into the surface behaviour of complex organic and biological system. It will also lead to commercial production by lonoptika under a royalty agreement with UMIST.
