Summary on Grant Application Form
A novel variable temperature (50K-1000K) spectrometer combining XPS and STM facilities will be developed and applied to the study of the surface chemistry of solid surfaces. The site-specific information obtainable from STM, together with the chemical processes than has been hitherto possible. A major aspect of the project will be the characterisation and control of oxygen states at metal surfaces, with a view to elucidating the mechanisms of selective oxidation and ammoxidation catalysis. The systems studied will range from well-defined metal single crystals to model supported heterogeneous catalysts. In tandem with the XPS / STM studies, we intend to assess the viability of atom-resolved spectroscopy of adsorbates, a technique which promises much but has received little attention.
