The use of powders in one of the fastest growing segments of the coatings industry, benefiting from a market growth of 10 per cent per annum. Powder coatings are of particular interest to the automobile industry. The processing of these multi-phase coatings however presents a challenge. The goal is to produce a smooth glossy and dense protective layer, but often problems such as orange peel( i.e. a mottled rough surface with low gloss) develop. Such problems are a direct outcome of a lack of control and understanding of the film formation process. We are seeking funds for a post-doctoral research assistant to develop in-situ physical and chemical techniques to study the processing of powder coatings, to model the processing, and to devise tactics for producing smooth glossy surfaces. We propose to use optical transmission and scanning laser confocal microscopy (SLCM) to study void size and concentration. We plan to use SLCM and optical reflectivity to monitor surface levelling and roughening during the processing. Spectroscopic techniques will provide an understanding of the cure chemistry that will, in turn, aid in explaining the film formation. Measurements of surface energy and rheology will enable the prediction and interpretation of film formation behaviour.
