Summary on Grant Application Form
The intention is to build an ion mobility apparatus and use mobility measurements to determine the structures of multiply charged metal ion complexes for a range of metals, including the first-row transition metals, and for a range of ligands. In some instances, the ligands will be those associated with metal ions in solution, i.e. [Cu(H2O)6]2+ or [Ni(NH3)6] 2+, and in other cases, more unusual ligands will be used in an attempt to accentuate electronic and structural effects. It is anticipated that the measurements will be sensitive to such effects as Jahn-Teller distortion and structural transformations that may accompany the gradual removal of ligands from, for example, an octahedral complex. A second series of experiments will determine appearance energies for the promotion of ligand loss from a complex. These values will be used to determine individual ligand binding energies for a range of different complexes. Such information is not currently available. This very new approach to transition metal chemistry will provide a quantitative picture of the important metal ion - molecule interactions that contribute to the structure and stability of a typical transition metal ion complex.
