Natural-language generation (NLG) systems are computer programmes which automatically generate reports, letters and other kinds of texts in English and other human languages. To date, knowledge acquisition (KA) for NLG systems has mostly relied on corpus analysis and general talks with domain experts. In this project I will experiment with using other KA techniques (developed by the expert-system community) for building an NLG system, including protocol analyses, focused interviews, structured group discussions and card sorting. The goal of the experiment is both to determine which of these KA techniques are most useful for acquiring the types of knowledge needed by NLG systems and also to investigate how these techniques should be modified to make them more useful for NLG system-building. This investigation will be done in the context of work by myself and several people from Aberdeen's medical community to build an NLG system which generates personalised letters which encourage people to stop smoking. A small pilot study in this domain (funded by the health service) has suggested that using a wide range of KA techniques is likely to lead to a considerably more effective system than relying just on corpus analysis and general discussions.
