Summary on Grant Application Form
The film cooling performance of gas turbine components affected by the presence of a gap and/or step misalignment between mating surfaces will be characterised experimentally. Measurements of heat transfer coefficient and adiabatic wall effectiveness are to be made downstream of generic cooling geometries disturbed by leakage into and from gaps with and without steps. The main factors influencing the heat transfer will be investigated. These factors are gap width, misalgnment step height, mainstream-to-gap flow angle, distance between cooling holes and gap, coolant/leakage-to-mainstream density ratio and blowing rate. The heat transfer coefficient and adiabatic wall effectiveness will be calculated from carefully conducted experiments using well-established transient thermal techniques. Both thermochromic liquid crystals and infra-red imaging will be used to obtain continous temperature histories of the test section surface. The research will provide data for the performance of new film cooling systems in industrial gas turbines and aeroengines, and for the validation of CFD codes.
