We propose to construct a high flux, ultrafast VUV source that will allow the production of pulsed, tuneable radiation from 6-60 eV at average intensities of roughly 10+12 photons/s into a bandwidth of less than 1 A. This will be achieved by high harmonic generation in a supersonic rare gas jet, using a Ti : sapphire femtosecond laser. Source tunability arises both from the selection of a given harmonic and because the fundamental radiation is tuneable. The pulsed nature of the source will lead to high peak powers (~10+21 photons/s ~ 10 kW), which may drive non-linear processes which are completely inaccessible with any current or proposed synchrotron. Ultrafast VUV photochemistry has yet to be studied in either the gas phase or on surfaces. Ultrafast photochemistry in the visible and UV is characterised by reaction dynamics that differ markedly from that of nanosecond photochemistry to be equally rich. The proposed source will support a wide range of science - from fundamental studies of ultrafast reaction dynamics to practical studies of surface modification. Once operational, we intend to make the source available as a national facility for UK users.
