Summary on Grant Application Form
Over the last twenty years there has been a steady growth in the commercial application of superplastic forming to manufacture engineering components although the process has been used for parts required in low to medium numbers because of the long forming times required. Recently, it has been demonstrated on a small scale that high superplastic strain rates (comparable to those used in mass production processes) can be achieved by refinement of grain size. The alloys in which these higher strain rates have been found have not been compositions that exhibit properties suitable for automotive applications and the manufacturing techniques have been very expensive. In the proposed effort experience gained in the commercialisation of earlier superplastic alloys will be applied to developing a high strain rate superplastic alloy with a composition tailored for low cost sheet production and structural application in automotive applications. In this respect the alternatives selected are a low cost consolidation route using a particulate feedstock and a novel ingot casting approach. Both provide the opportunity to meet the performance and production goals of the programme.
