Energy may be transferred from one atom/molecule to another via the resonant dipole-dipole interaction (RDDI). Recent theoretical predictions indicate a significant dependence of this process on the photonic mode density, however the theories disagree on the nature of this dependence. Surprisingly, although this type of transfer has been extensively investigated, these predictions have yet to be experimentally tested. If a significant dependence is found then it will open up a new way to control the interaction between light and matter.The project will use time resolved spectroscopy to study the kinetics of energy transfer between rare-earth ions. Samples will be fabricated from planar organic mono-molecular layers, thus allowing the distance between the donor of the energy and the acceptor to be controlled with great precision and over a wide range. By placing our samples in an optical micro-cavity we will be able to investigate the influence of the photonic mode density of the cavity on the RDDI so providing vital new data to evaluate the conflicting theories and allow us to build a better understanding of this energy transfer process.
