The need to manage our urban road networks more efficiently is increasingly being seen as an essential transport objective. A knowlege of up-to the minute journey times is key to effective on-line management and can be used to support systems which control traffic and provide to travellers both before and during their journeys. The SCOOT UTC system is a source of sound journey time estimates in many urban areas, although such estimates are limited to SCOOT regions and often exclude significant corridors.The research will build on the earlier work and the concept of a 'switching ratio' which enables queue state to be simply categorised using SCOOT type loop. Both mechanistic and neural network approaches will be used to develop models which will be subject to separate validation. These will cover:I. Optimisation of detector arrangements (for effiency and cost effectiveness)II. A range of link characteristics which include alternative intersection types, parked vehicles, bus stops, sinks and sources and pedestrian activities.III. The use of alternative detectors with other characteristics which more readily fit developing work-wide markets.The site for this research activity will be Southampton which has substantial background infrastructure developed for the ROMANSE project. Additional detectors will be installed in support of this activity.
