Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed research is to investigate the syntheses, structures and reactivities of non stabilised group 15 ylides and imines and the interaction of these species with s-block metals. Two modes of interaction will be considered: complexation in which the ylide or imine acts as a neutral Lewis base towards the metal centre; and compounds in which the ylide or imine is deprotonated by the metal to form an ylide or imine anion. All syntheses and subsequent manipulation of products will be performed under an inert atmosphere by using standard Schlenk and glovebox techniques. For all compounds bonding and structural features will be probed by X-ray crystallography and ab initio MO calculations. In addition to standard characterisation, compounds will be characterised (where appropriate) by very low temperature high resolution X-ray and neutron diffraction techniques, multinuclear and variable-temperature NMR spectroscopy, and variable-concentration cryoscopic techniques. The research will be of benefit to fundamental science in the areas of s-block metal chemistry, organophosphorus chemistry and general co-ordination chemistry. Many of the proposed compounds may find application as novel reagents in stereospecific organic and industrial users.
