Summary on Grant Application Form
The project intends to deliver a method and supporting tools to enable systems engineers to understand and describe legacy systems in terms of requirement on data, behaviour and function without extensive analysis of the coding. This project will approach recovery of requirements from an analysis of system behaviour. This behaviour includes input, output and other interactions with users. Original documents such as system design, if available, will be used as guidance to identify components which contribute to the overall functionality of the system. The behaviour of components and the functionality of the whole system will be modelled in terms of types of data required, operations and rules imposed on these operations. The AMBOLS method and its support tools will enable systems analysts and engineers to understand legacy systems and recover their requirements without examining the code. The result can be the basis for re-engineering or maintenance. AMBOLS can also be used in conjunction with the practice of reverse engineering, or as a means of verification. The AMBOLS approach and tools will be validated through a major case study involving a legacy system in the collaborating company.
