This is a joint programme between Liverpool, De Montford and Cambridge Universities to develop novel devices, technologies and circuits for Power and HV Integrated Microelectronics. The three partners will concentrate on: (a) process and device design for HVICs (DMU and Liverpool); (b) novel MOS-controlled device concepts for efficient HV switching (Liverpool, DMU and Cambridge; (c) integrated circuitry to drive and minimise power loss power devices (Cambridge); and (d) HVIC power switches, that combine power devices and control circuitry (Liverpool, DMU and Cambridge).The three distinct circuit frequency ranges considered and targeted applications are (i) above 1 MHz power converters for rf equipment and lamp ballasts; (ii) 50kHz to 1MHz - switched mode power supplies and; (iii) up to 50kHz - PWM power conditioning in motor drives. A close link with industries will enable rapid transfer of the advanced processes, devices and circuits for product development. The staff at SUMC will be closely involved in enhancing the process. Rigorous device and process modelling will be used to predict, contrast and optimise each aspect of the proposed structure and technologies. On-chip interconnection techniques will be integrated with device design and their reliability tested. Control circuitry will be fabricated along with devices and evaluated.
