Summary on Grant Application Form
The project will provide a basic understanding of novel types of electronic phenomena which occur in crystals where rare-earth ions are weakly coupled to a system of strongly correlated electrons. For example, a new type of heavy electron behaviour will be investigated, and an explanation of why certain rare-earth elements are especially harmful to superconductivity will be sought. Selected model compounds will be subject to a programme of neutron scattering and laboratory experiments designed to expose which of their characteristics underpin the new phenomena. Magnetic structures, spin density distributions and electronic excitations are some of the properties which will be studied in single crystal and polycrystalline samples. The experimental results will be compared with theoretical predictions to asses the validity of current ideas in condensed matter physics, and the conclusions will be disseminated to the wider scientific community via publications and oral presentations.
