Summary on Grant Application Form
Work on legacy systems has almost entirely concentrated on technical solutions such as reverse engineering. Take-up of this technology has been weak, because industry has lacked a means of deciding to use it or not. We plan to create a two phase model to help organisations manage their legacy systems. In the first phase, a set of attributes of the business, the software, the process, and management are obtained. This will give a systems assessment of the software in terms of the business context. This is input to phase 2, which uses information about legacy system techniques to determine a solution and enable calculation of cost-benefit and risk. The research will be done by an iterative approach, creating an early prototype model and refining it through case studies. An associated PhD student will undertake more speculative work on risk and decision modelling. Four milestones are identified in a 36 month project. Collaboration with Dr Brooke in the Business School will allow us to take due account of human attributes in the decision making process.
