Summary on Grant Application Form
Previous work in the reengineering of legacy systems has tended to result in new systems which are no better able to respond to or enable business process change than the legacy systems they are built from. We plan to investigate the use of agent-based architecture during reengineering as offering a way out of this cycle. The work will be carried out in four stages, carrying out the reengineering of a fragment of a legacy system in each of the first three. The first stage will be used to investigate protocols which can cope with failure to achieve tasks; the second to develop simple diagnostic and planning mechanisms; and the third to provide facilities for effective user-feedback and user-maintenance. A separate stage will assess the effectiveness of the architecture work on user-feedback mechanisms for the support of end-user maintenance.
