Summary on Grant Application Form
We will purchase and install a Sanders Model Maker 3-Dimensional ink-jet printing system. This will be adapted to work with waxes loaded with ceramic and metal powders. At first wax and ceramic or metal powder systems developed for injection moulding of parts at temperatures below the ink-jet machine's operating temperature will be studied. Wax viscosity and surface tensions will be characterised and the influence of ceramic loading on jet formation and impact behaviour studied. We will study the burn-out characteristics of the wax and determine suitable sintering schedules to form solid objects. The characteristics of this ink-jet printing method of ceramic and metal green body formation will be determined including: resolution of the system, vertical edge definition, planarity of features with a nominally common z co-ordinate value, retention of resolution after wax burn-out, and green body strength and toughness. The first year of the programme will be aided by the presence of Prof John Halloran of the University of Michigan - an expert in ceramic processing and its application to solid freeform processing technologies (separate Visiting Fellowship application in progress)
