Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal seeks to take advantage of the latest developments in nanoparticle technology and use them for the controlled modification of STM tips. In particular we will modify gold STM tips by covalently attaching magnetic (Fe 203) nanoparticles. We have chosen a very short, rigid, attachment layer to couple the nanoparticle to the tip. Spin-polarised electron tunnelling characteristics of nanoparticle modified tips will be evaluated using optically pumped GaAs. The interaction of modified tips with magnetic thin films will also be studied.
