Summary on Grant Application Form
The project will provide a mixed procedural and fuzzy model of a diesel engine and its load. The model will be adaptive and have at least four levels of detail ranging from the overall system level to sub-systems, components and parts. The project will examine minimum sensor requirements for appropriate monitoring and control. Algorithms for tracking the system parameters for predicting faults and for system control will be produced based on developments and fusion of methods established for other similar purposes. the diesel engine model will be used to provide verifiable test data for primary evaluation of the control and monitoring algorithms. It will also be used as a means of representing the system status in the developed diagnosis and control scheme. The sliding mode observer used in the control scheme will be designed as a knowledge source for the monitor. The schemes devised will be tested off-line using test data from Perkins Technology and then on-line with a real diesel engine and load in dynamic tests, with and without fault conditions.
