Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal seeks to identify potential ligand sets for the complexation of lanthanide ions, in order to generate compounds with liquid crystal properties and with substantial magnetic response. It is intended to focus, at least initially, on bicyclic cryptands containing a variety of bridging functions, including those which will allow the generation of a trianionic ligand, leading to neutral complexes. The new materials will be characterised chemically and in terms of both their liquid crystals and magnetic properties using a combination of in-house expertise and extra-mural collaborations.
