|
The aim of this research is to provide manufacturing companies with tools to help them assess and improve their responsiveness to changes affecting production. This work seeks to address the following questions for a manufacturing company:1. How well does production respond to the most important changes the business faces? These may be internal or external to the companies, expected or unexpected.2. By using improved methods for production control to exploit existing equipment, computer hardware and organisation rigidities, how much better can production respond to these changes?A framework for auditing the responsiveness to change will be established which draws on existing work in flexibility assessment, but examines more closely on manufacturing control and the decision processes involved in production.Co-operative approaches to control and decision making will be examined as a mechanism for achieving greater responsiveness, particularly in the face of unforeseen change.
