Summary on Grant Application Form
This short (18 month) feasibility study will employ conventional low pressure MOCVD growth technology to grow quantum dots of the III-V materials GaAs and InP on glass substrates by stimulating growth under Volmer-Weber control. The resulting structures will be examined prior to, and after exposure to air by scanning probe microscopy. Electrical contact to the dots will be achieved via the use of transparent tin oxide or indium tin oxide coatings on the glass substrates while lateral isolation of individual dots will be achieved via deposition of insulating oxides. Both conducting and insulating oxide deposition will take place in a dedicated reactor system separate to the III-V growth reactors. Isolated structures will be examined using scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) or atomic force microscopy as appropriate. Additional characterisation will be achieved using X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and UV/vis absorption spectroscopy. Preliminary current injection studies will be performed macroscopically via the conducting coatings and microscopically via the STM. In this way the feasibility of this novel approach for the development of cheap, large area, visible display systems will be evaluated.
