Members of organizations are increasingly required to network or enter into formal or informal strategic alliances with people in other organizations in order to develop and share knowledge needed to improve performance. Academic researchers are no exception to this need to network. Obtaining funding and conducting research is increasing dependent on establishing collaborative alliances among individual researchers who will be involved in carrying out the research. The basis of this research proposal is a unique opportunity to research, in detail over tome, a community of academics as they engage in a major research project (the target project) which itself involves the development of a university-industry network. The proposed research will investigate, using diaries, interviews and cognitive mapping methodologies, the process involved in the creation, development, and operation of the network on the target project over its three year life-span. The target research project will use technologies, supplies by their collaborative partner British Telecom, to communicate and share knowledge in order to overcome the difficulties of working from geographically separated locations. Therefore, the research proposes here will also consider how new communication technologies influence such network activity.A model of the networking process derived from analysis of the target project will be tested out, using questionnaires, on a larger sample of EPSRC collaborative research projects in order to assess its generalisability.
