The invention of electroluminescence from molecular rare earth chelates will be exploited to produce low cost light emitting displays. The previously optimised chelates of Tb (III) and Eu(III) chelates will be used for green and red displays respectively. Blue light emitting chelates of Gd(III), Y(III), La(III), Ce(IV) and Th(IV) will be synthesised with a range of adduct forming molecules. Quantum yield of solid state photoluminescence will be measured and the chelates optimised for further electroluminescence studies. The chelates will be dissolved in suitable solvents and coated onto indium tin oxide/glass or transparent conducting polymer coated polyester (to produce flexible LEDs). Top contracts will be made by vacuum evaporating a metal or alloy. An understanding of the mechanism of the nature of electroluminescence from these chelates and the operation of devices therefrom, will be used to scale the devices up to 10cm x 10 cm with a brightness of up to 4,000 Cd per square meters in red, green and blue colours.
